Flowering size orchid
Mediocalcar decoratum is a compact, creeping miniature orchid from the humid mountain forests of New Guinea and neighboring islands. With its delicate shoots and small, fleshy leaves, it forms dense cushions – ideal for bowls, small baskets, or mounted on bark with moss. The flowers usually appear singly near the shoots and are typically urn- to tubular, waxy, and bright yellow to orange, often with a lighter, contrasting opening – a colorful accent for many weeks. Cultivation is successful in partial shade with consistently even moisture, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Temperate conditions are well tolerated; many plants thrive when grown in cooler to temperate conditions. A finely structured, consistently slightly moist substrate (fine bark with sphagnum moss) supports its shallow, creeping growth; waterlogging and complete drying out should be avoided. A pronounced dormancy period is not necessary. Slight fluctuations in temperature and watering between seasons are sufficient. This species is ideally suited for display cases, cool windowsills, or heated greenhouses and rewards with frequent flowering throughout the year.
