Coelogyne is a versatile genus with three different temperature requirements — from subtropical-warm to cool-alpine. The care depends on which group you have. Those who assign it correctly have one of the most rewarding orchid genera ever.

Current status according to Kew World Checklist (2025): around 200 recognized species in South and Southeast Asia. The reclassification in 2018 integrated some Pholidota species into Coelogyne; the formerly common Coelogyne massangeana is now correctly called C. tomentosa.

Coelogyne cristata — the Winter Bloomer

The commercially most important species because it blooms at Christmas and mid-winter time. Pure white, intensely sweet-scented flowers on hanging spikes.

Summer location: bright, in partial shade outdoors, water regularly
From September: keep cool and dry. Water sparingly, at most monthly. Temperature 5 to 12 °C — ideal for conservatory or unheated room.
Dry phase: no water for about 6 to 8 weeks, until the flower buds appear
With buds: bring back to light and water moderately

Those who keep Coelogyne cristata warm and moist through the winter will not see any blooms. The cool dry rest is not optional.

Location

Bright to partially shaded. East or west window is optimal for most Coelogyne. Warm-loving species (speciosa) tolerate more sun than cool-requiring ones (cristata).

Watering

Regularly during the growth phase — Coelogyne likes more consistent moisture than Cattleya. The substrate should never dry out completely, except during the rest phase of the cool species.

Summer: every 4 to 6 days
Winter (except cristata group in rest phase): every 7 to 10 days
Pseudobulbs become slightly wrinkled when dry — water in time
