Ascocentrum miniatum (today usually classified as Vanda miniata) is a compact, monopodial epiphytic orchid from Southeast Asia (including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam). It forms short stems with leathery, strap-shaped leaves arranged in two rows, making it well-suited for baskets or coarse bark substrate with excellent air circulation. From late spring to early summer, numerous bright orange to yellow-orange flowers, approximately 2 cm in diameter, appear in upright to slightly arching, many-flowered racemes – densely packed and very striking. Cultivation is successful under bright conditions with slightly filtered sunlight, warm temperatures, and consistent watering; the substrate should dry out quickly between waterings without drying out completely. A pronounced dormancy period is not necessary, but in cooler months, it should be kept somewhat drier and with reduced fertilization. Mounting in baskets or airy containers is ideal, allowing the roots to dry quickly and receive plenty of light.
