Bulbophyllum aff. smithianum is a small, epiphytic Bulbophyllum from the humid, warm forests of Southeast Asia. This compact plant forms short-stalked, oval pseudobulbs, each with a leathery leaf and a creeping rhizome – ideal for cultivation on trellises or in small, well-ventilated pots with very permeable, moist substrate (e.g., fine bark mixed with sphagnum moss). The inflorescence emerges near the pseudobulb and bears small flowers, approximately 2 cm in diameter; depending on the individual within this group, the shape and markings are variable, but greenish-yellow to yellowish-brown tones with reddish speckles are typical. Partial shade, consistent moisture with very good air circulation, and intermediate to warm temperatures promote compact growth and regular flowering. Light, regular fertilization during active growth phases supports the development of strong pseudobulbs. This indicates that it is a plant closely related to B. smithianum; minor variations in growth or flowering are therefore possible, but remain within the usual, attractive Bulbophyllum character.
