Flowering size orchid
Elegant, compact Maxillaria cucullata: This epiphytic species from Mesoamerica grows with densely packed, egg-shaped pseudobulbs, each bearing a single linear, leathery leaf. Short inflorescences emerge from the base, bearing solitary, characteristically hooded flowers – hence the name cucullata. This species prefers bright, filtered light (light shade at midday) and temperate to warm growing conditions. Keep the substrate consistently slightly moist with good air circulation; an airy bark substrate with some sphagnum moss has proven effective. A pronounced dormancy period is not necessary; simply reduce watering somewhat in winter. Fertilize sparingly and regularly during the growing season. Flowering occurs in many cultures from late summer into winter and may have a subtle fragrance. Its compact growth habit makes this Maxillaria ideal for windowsills or display cases; repot every 1–2 years once the substrate has degraded.
