*Maxillaria friedrichsthalii* is an epiphytic species from the humid mountain forests of Central America (including Costa Rica and Panama), at elevations of 500–1500 m. It was described by H.G. Reichenbach in 1852. The plant forms small, oval pseudobulbs on a creeping rhizome, each bearing a narrow-lanceolate, leathery leaf. Short, solitary flower spikes emerge from the base. The flowers are small, creamy to yellowish, and often marked with reddish-brown markings; they are fragrant. Cultivation: temperate to warm with filtered light (partial shade), consistently moist year-round with very good drainage, high humidity, and good air circulation. A pronounced dormancy period is not necessary; the soil should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings in winter. Fertilize lightly during active growth. Flowering time is usually late summer to autumn (approximately September to November), though this may vary slightly depending on growing conditions. This species is suitable for pots or baskets with a breathable, moisture-retaining substrate (e.g., fine bark with sphagnum content).
