Tillandsia paleacea

[36860]

Tillandsia paleacea is a gray-leaved, xeromorphic air plant from the dry regions of the western Andes of South America, particularly in Peru and adjacent areas (Chile, Bolivia). It forms compact, cushion-like clumps of narrow, silvery-gray leaves with dense trichomes that reflect light and absorb moisture from the air. A slender inflorescence with subtly colored bracts emerges from mature rosettes; the tubular flowers are usually violet to blue-violet. In cultivation, T. paleacea remains manageable (often around 10–20 cm) and is well-suited for mounting on cork, wood, or stone. Care: very bright to sunny location with good air circulation. Moisten regularly (soaking or thorough misting), then allow to dry completely; avoid waterlogging. Temperatures from cool to warm are well tolerated. Fertilize very weakly every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. The flowering period is variable in cultivation and not strictly seasonal.
