Tillandsia reichenbachii is a compact, epiphytic air plant native to the dry to semi-arid regions of South America (including Bolivia and northern Argentina). It forms dense rosettes of silvery-gray, trichome-rich leaves that reflect sunlight and tolerate short periods of drought well. The upright to slightly inclined inflorescence bears a few, strikingly fragrant, delicate whitish to pale lavender flowers; the fragrance is particularly noticeable in the morning. In cultivation, T. reichenbachii prefers very bright light, ideally including some direct sunlight, and plenty of air circulation. Water by thoroughly misting or briefly immersing the plant, then allow it to dry completely. Keep it moderately moist during active growth, and somewhat drier during the darker months. Temperatures ranging from temperate to warm are suitable, with a distinct day-night temperature difference. The species is particularly effective when growing on cork or wood; occasional, weak applications of bromeliad-specific fertilizer promote compact growth. Over time, the plant forms side shoots (offshoots) and develops attractive, silvery-shimmering cushions.
